Yankees/Red Sox Rivalry Escalates Into Bench-Clearing Brawl

Yankees/Red Sox Rivalry Escalates Into Bench-Clearing Brawl

The rivalry lives on.

A new generation of New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox players etched a new mark in the bitter rivalry Wednesday night as a hit by pitch sparked a rambunctious brawl at Fenway Park.

Tension Wednesday began in the third inning when Yankees first baseman Tyler Austin slid into second baseman Brock Holt attempting to break up a double play.

That emptied both benches. Austin, 26, and Holt, 29, eventually cooled off, and the game resumed.

In the wake of this incident, the Yankees general manager Brian Cashman erred on the opinion that "there was no reason for fisticuffs", but, when "two competitive teams [are] going at it, stuff happens". "I had no clue where [the ball] was going".

Red Sox relief pitcher Joe Kelly, left, knocks down NY s Tyler Austin as they fight during the seventh inning.

"I felt like my slide into second base was a clean slide", Austin himself said.

Said Austin: "I thought there was absolutely nothing wrong with that slide".

Austin's later at-bat in the seventh inning against Joe Kelly, who throws in the upper 90s and sometimes reaches 100, was really what set off the fireworks. According to MLB.com, Nevin said he had been yelling toward the Red Sox's dugout and Kahnle said he got angry after he was pushed by an umpire.

In the ensuing fracas, Kelly and Austin tussled briefly on the ground as Austin threw a punch that landed on the side of the head of Red Sox third base coach Carlos Febles. "Other than that, Kelly executed perfectly", Martinez tweeted. Yankees hitting coach Marcus Thames shoved Austin across the infield toward the Yankees' dugout.

Austin and Kelly were both ejected from the game.

The Red Sox would go on to lose 10-7 as Chapman closed the door.

They'll play the rubber match of this three-game series on Thursday night at Fenway. "I mean that was pretty innocuous if you ask me". Three years later, Lou Piniella bowled into Fisk at the plate, and Red Sox pitcher Bill Lee separated a shoulder in the ensuing fighting.
