Winter storm watch for Saturday and Sunday

Winter storm watch for Saturday and Sunday

A winter storm watch has been issued for about the northern half of Lower Michigan.

A winter storm is expected to bring heavy spring snow and blizzard conditions to the U.S. Midwest, forecasters said Thursday. Significant snowfall amounts of 15 to 25 cm are possible by Monday night. The southern row of counties in the winter storm watch area won't have the watch go in effect until Saturday. Total snow accumulations of 3 to 5 inches, with localized amounts up around 6 inches A light glaze of ice is also possible. While snowfall accumulations will not be extreme, the combination of wind and snow will create very low visibility and risky travel conditions Friday afternoon through Saturday morning.

If freezing rain continues risky roadway conditions and power outages are likely to develop. As the snow falls, wind gusts over 50 miles per hour will create blizzard conditions across Northwest Kansas. The best chance for whiteouts will be late Friday night there.

We can't rule out a mix of precipitation moving through the area Tuesday night before Wednesday becomes partly cloudy and windy with highs near 50.

As for snow potential for Friday night through early Sunday morning, the ground, roads and roofs have all been baking in the April sun so they are fairly warm and do not want this sloppy mess around.

The National Weather Service says parts of Nebraska could get up to 14 inches of snow, with up to 10 inches in Iowa.
