WH on Scooter Libby Pardon: 'The Right Thing to Do'

"For over a dozen years we have suffered under the weight of a awful injustice", Libby said. He said Trump "recognized this wrong and would not let it persist".

Libby served as Vice President Dick Cheney's chief of staff. Rather, it's been mostly about alleged false statements, just as it was with Libby. It is shocking that the aide to Vice President Cheney was ever prosecuted, particularly because the American government — what used to be called in court the “People of the United States” — already knew who committed the leak the prosecutor was appointed to investigate.

Bush spokesman Freddy Ford said, "President Bush is pleased for Scooter and his family".

"In 2015, one of the key witnesses against Mr. Libby recanted her testimony, stating publicly that she believes the prosecutor withheld relevant information from her during interviews that would have altered significantly what she said". Some speculate that this pardon is an attempt by the Trump administration to discredit Comey and his investigational direction.

Liz Cheney is a daughter of the former vice president. He made a exceptional counsel to withhold a high profile case that contributed to Libby's verdict in 2007.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders insisted the pardon was not meant to send a message to the special counsel investigating Russian meddling in the 2016 election, saying, "One thing has nothing to do with the other".

Libby's attorneys, Joseph diGenova and Victoria Toensing, issued a statement thanking Trump for "addressing a gross injustice" they said was inflicted by Fitzgerald and Comey.

"I don't know Mr. Libby", Trump admitted in a statement published by the White House.

President Trump issued a pardon Friday to former Vice President Dick Cheney's top aide, saying his 2007 conviction for obstructing the probe into the leaking of a Central Intelligence Agency operative's identity, saying the conviction now appears to be tainted.

Plame appeared on the same network Friday to say the pardon was symbolic and had nothing to do with Libby as an individual.

Since the conviction, Libby has since had his law license restored and former Virginia Gov.

Libby was not accused of leaking the Central Intelligence Agency operative's identity, but he was convicted of lying to the grand jury, a move that some say he did to protect Cheney.

President George W. Bush commuted Libby's sentence of 30 months, but refused to pardon him. Armitage was never charged with anything and an investigation found the leak did no harm to national security. "Hopefully, this full pardon will help rectify a very sad potion of his life". While Mr. Fitzgerald prepared her, she recalls, his pointed queries led her to believe that a four-word question regarding Joseph Wilson surrounded by parentheses in her notebook-"(wife works in Bureau?)"-proved that Mr. Libby had told her about Ms. Plame's Central Intelligence Agency employment in a June 23, 2003, conversation (well before Mr. Libby's phone conversation with Russert).

Before his conviction, Mr. Libby had rendered more than a decade of honorable service to the Nation as a public servant at the Department of State, the Department of Defense, and the White House. "Libby was convicted of obstruction of justice and perjury in a fair trial", Plame said in a statement. "He is a vile and despicable individual who is undermining the democracy of our country", Wilson told MSNBC in an interview with host Katy Tur Friday.

That's fine, because Trump will pardon you if it suits his venal political interest.

While his White House was being packed up in boxes, Bush mulled candidates for presidential pardons.
