Uber still believes autonomous vehicles have a future, says CEO

Uber is looking to give people several options for getting around in United States cities.

But it's an important means of showing good will. Khosrowshahi is trying to tell cities that the Uber of today is a "true partner" - and not the combative, "ask for forgiveness, not permission" startup of the past. Through the deal, Uber users will be able to pay for transit rides in its app or scan into rail and bus services using their smartphones.

'Having a greater variety of transportation modes at your fingertips helps make it increasingly easy to live without a auto, ' said Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi in a blog post. This also contributes to producing less #bikelitter, as a Jump Bikes official hashtag describes what is left over at docking stations. As part of the pilot program, Jump is now only allowed to operate 250 bikes in the city.

Jump and Uber were previously partners and 250 red bikes - which could be picked up or dropped off anywhere using built-in Global Positioning System - have been available through the Uber app in San Francisco since the start of the year. In February, Uber added an option in its app that lets users reserve and rent Jump bikes in San Francisco.

Going forward, it's critical that we act with integrity in everything we do, and learn how to be a better partner to every city we operate in.

Uber and Getaround already had a partnership in place that allowed Uber drivers to make money driving Getaround cars, but this new deal will give a wider demographic access to the vehicles.

Uber has long billed itself as much more than a ride-hailing service. With cars available instantly for rent in the Uber app, fewer people will need to store them in garages for those sporadic grocery store runs, daytime adventures, or weekend getaways.

"If you really want to provide something that can replace the vehicle in people's lives, you want to have more than ride-sharing", says Andrew Salzberg, Uber's transportation policy chief.

Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi has said that the company still believes in the future prospects for self-driving cars. The service was first piloted in San Francisco earlier this year.

Uber's expansion doesn't just stop at these updates.

Users select a nearby bike using the map found in the Uber app. It's notable due to the fact that Uber's goal of being at the forefront of the robo-taxi sector is looking less and less likely to be achieved, with Waymo/Google and Cruise/GM both looking very looking to be the actual pioneers in the sector, and with Uber's competitor Lyft being the beneficiary due to its close relationship with both.
