Salman not alone, 5 other Bollywood celebs who went to jail

Mumbai - An Indian court jailed Bollywood star Salman Khan for five years for poaching on Thursday, lawyers said, a sentence likely to derail the career of one of the country's most popular actors.

The 52-year-old has worked in the film industry for nearly 30 years, with his first film role in 1988.

"We have made special security arrangements in the jail for Salman Khan", superintendent of Jodhpur Central Jail Vikram Singh said.

Khan pleaded not guilty and has long maintained his innocence as the case has languished in legal limbo over the years.

The defense is now arguing that Khan is now a philanthropist and supports many children and poor people, and therefore a lower sentence should be given. Held guilty under Section 9/51 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, he had faced a maximum punishment of six years behind bars.

Four other actors - Saif Ali Khan, Sonali Bendre, Tabu and Neelam - who were working with him on the film and who had also been charged with the offense, were acquitted.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature listed it as a "near threatened" species in 2013 and it is protected under the India's Wildlife Act. He was sent to jail and released on August 31 after he got bail from the high court.

This is his fourth stint in the Jodhpur Central Jail.

The case was being heard at the court of chief judicial magistrate Dev Khatri in Jodhpur.

Khan and other actors were accused of poaching blackbucks on the midnight of October 1-2, 1998 during the filming of the Hindi movie Hum Saath Saath Hain.

Then, in 2016, the Rajasthan High Court acquitted Salman Khan of all charges, saying there was no evidence to show that the animals that were found dead had been shot by the actor's licensed gun. He launched a charity called Being Human - The Salman Khan Foundation that took on various health and education initiatives and was seen participating in various philanthropic activities.

While the cases piled up in court, Salman courted notoriety on the side too.

In an entirely separate case, he was acquitted in 2015 over a hit-and-run incident dating back to 2002.
