Prince Philip, 96, admitted to hospital for planned hip surgery

Prince Philip, 96, admitted to hospital for planned hip surgery

Queen Elizabeth IIs husband Prince Philip, was today admitted to a London hospital for a planned hip surgery, Buckingham Palace said.

Philip also missed an engagement on March 22 because of his hip. Buckingham Palace had previously announced that the 96-year-old royal was experiencing hip problems when he missed the traditional Royal Maundy Service last Tuesday at St. George's Chapel alongside his wife, Queen Elizabeth.

Britain's Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, leads members of the royal family as they arrive to attend the Christmas Day church service on the Sandringham estate in eastern England, Britain, December 25, 2017.

Prince Philip won't be sleeping in his palace bed tonight. He was absent from the Easter Mattins Service at St George's Chapel where Meghan Markle and Prince Harry will Wednesday in May.

The Duke of Edinburgh has been long suffering from issues with his hip.

Philip retired from his official royal duties last August, however, a spokesperson confirmed that he would still be attending events from "time to time". A month later he was admitted to the King Edward VII hospital as "a precautionary measure" following an infection arising from a pre-existing condition.

He and Elizabeth celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in November. The surgery was conducted under general anesthetic and the palace later said he was progressing satisfactorily but would remain in the hospital for approximately two weeks.

Philip is now expected to attend Harry and Markle's May 19 wedding at St. George's Chapel with other members of the royal family.
