McIlroy goes back to drawing board after Augusta miss

McIlroy goes back to drawing board after Augusta miss

Like Sunday again, it truly nearly happened. But the announcement that Augusta National will host a women's amateur tournament days before the Masters was most monumental. In other words, it's created to drive you insane, if you aren't already.

We also saw some awesome excitement on the Sunday with Rickie Fowler's 67 following his 65 on Saturday, Paul Casey with a chance to get to 62, Jordan Spieth with the chance to get to 62, there was so much in the offing, but beyond all that, it was Patrick Reed who just stayed that little step ahead of everybody else and in the end, he's the Masters champion.

Going into the first major of this year, was it going to be another repeat for Fowler? Every time he was challenged on this birdie-drenched afternoon of sun and constant celebrations, he responded. However, Spieth did his best to make Reed earn this win, coming from ninth place after the third round to tie for the lead on the back nine Sunday. Then he made pars to the house and never relinquished that slimmest margin.

One takeaway from the 2018 Masters might be this: Golf fans might as well get used to Spieth as a dominant storyline at Augusta National's famed competition for a green jacket.

"It was tough out there".

Reed made a 25-foot birdie putt on No. 12, and his biggest birdie was a 9-iron to 8 feet on the 14th that broke the tie with Spieth. "Not only did it fuel my fire a little bit, but also it just takes the pressure off of me and adds it back to him".

Danny Willett wasn't the patron's choice in 2016 when he took advantage of Spieth's misfortunes at the 12th hole.

Patrick Reed was given a further taste of what life is like in a Masters green jacket as he took in an National Basketball Association game alongside two Hollywood A-listers on Monday night.

McIlroy escaped with a par after a wild drive on the first and birdied the second after missing from four feet for an eagle, but was left to rue dropped shots on the third and fifth which killed any momentum. Now it's Rory who has the Jinx Event to cope with. "That's just the flows of golf, you just have to handle it".

Experience key at Augusta National, but it's not a guarantee.

But Reed's victory was not just the result of his steely resolve and poise under pressure. Despite some discomfort, miraculously Finau shot an opening round of 68 (-4) to sit just back from the lead. "Be stubborn", he once said about learning by watching Woods. Collins often noticed the youngster hitting balls on the practice range but never provided Reed with swing lessons. You can't do this, you can't do that.

Fowler endured another near-miss, but his charging final-round 67, which left him one shot behind Reed, had him looking forward to the US Open at Shinecock in June. It wasn't Reed's fault that McIlroy couldn't buy a putt.

He became the fourth straight Masters champion to capture his first major.

They pick Rory. They cheer for Rory.

The support that he received was more than that afforded to Reed, who has been accused of arrogance and misdemeanors during his college and professional careers. He bogeyed the hole in rounds one, three and four, and shot the aforementioned two-over 6 on Friday. Each year, the torment just gets worse. The bigger the moment, the better he seems to play.

Still, Spieth became the seventh player in Masters history to shoot a 64 in the final round.

"I'm just out here to play golf and try to win golf tournaments", Reed said.

Don't worry, Rory. Let's have another therapy session next week. Turns out, he's felt that way about himself, too.

McIlroy, 28, said his latest Augusta flop will not stop him becoming the sixth golfer to complete the Grand Slam. To his amazed delight, he shot 65.

"Unlike the earlier Tiger, "unless I win, I'm wasting my time", he's taking the increments as positive signs". "I stand by my comments. Previously I was still feeling the nerves, dealing with rough rounds or things not going your way".

Fowler's win at THE PLAYERS in 2015 was one of the most dramatic, exciting and memorable victories in the history of this event. Because of his honesty after his win, we now know that Reed was bedeviled by very similar questions. He's a major champion.

"Today was definitely probably the hardest mentally a round of golf could possibly be", said Reed, who posted a 15-under 273 total. I mean, I have no idea, and honestly I don't really care what people say on Twitter, or if they are cheering for me or not cheering for me. It's awesome and satisfying.
