Google is shutting down it URL Shortner next year

For those who are calling URL shorter APIs to manage goo.gl links, are able to do so for another one year before Google shuts down the service completely.

Google entered the niche late and we asked back in 2010 whether anyone needed the Google URL Shortener as it did not really offer anything that popular services did not offer already. Google now wants the users and developers to move to Firebase Dynamic Links with the latest announcement meant to "refocus" the company's efforts.

However, existing users can continue to generate short links on the goo.gl console after April 13 and will also be allowed to view their analytics data and download their short link information in CSV format until March 30, 2019, after which the goo.gl console will be officially shuttered. While most features of goo.gl will eventually sunset, all existing links will continue to redirect to the intended destination.

Launched in 2009, Google's URL shortening service has been quite useful and fun, especially when they added third-party API, the ability to create QR codes and ability to link right to iOS and Android apps. According to Hermanto, FDLs are smart URLs that enable users to direct other users to any location within an iOS, Android or web app. All you had to do was to append.info to any goo.gl link to display click statistics for any link. You can create new links with the Firebase console.

As upsetting as this closure could be, the fact that there are many URL shortener alternatives make this a minor deal for most.

Google says consumers can use FDL but also recommend services such as Bitly and Ow.ly. First, it was used for Google Toolbar and Feedburner, but it became goo.gl and opened up to the public in September 2010.
