Funeral Held For Journalist Shot During Protest at Gaza Border

Israel has faced mounting questions over its use of live fire after 10 days of protests and clashes along the Gaza Strip border in which its forces have killed 30 Palestinians, according to Gaza's health ministry.

WAFA said in its monthly report on Israeli violations against journalists that 16 journalists were either shot and injured by Israeli forces, suffocated by teargas or beaten by Israeli soldiers.

At least 491 people were also wounded by Israeli gunfire, the ministry said, as thousands of protesters approached the border fence around Gaza for a second Friday in a row, burning tyres and hurling stones at Israeli forces. Since then the IDF has killed 31 Palestinian protestors who have come to the barrier or attempted to cut through it. The border area appeared calm Saturday. Abu Amra said Murtaja was clearly marked as a journalist and wearing a helmet and protective vest.

The Israeli ambassador's letter (6 April) is a good example of how Israel and its apologists seek to dismiss legitimate criticism by conflating it with antisemitism.

Despite these efforts, more than 1,300 Palestinians were injured - around 30 of them critically - by Israeli forces in Gaza on Friday. "The IDF fired towards them".

"There are indications that individuals killed or wounded were unarmed or did not pose a serious threat, and in some cases were actually running away from the Green Line fence", Elizabeth Throssell, a spokesperson for the office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, said of last week's events. The blockade has made it increasingly hard for Hamas to govern.

Gaza's economy has been devastated by years of Israeli military attacks and a joint Israeli-Egyptian blockade.

Israel argues that Hamas could have ended the suffering of Gaza's 2 million people by disarming and renouncing violence.

The Great Return March is a 45-day protest festival that will culminate on May 15 - Nakba Day, also known as the day of catastrophe - when Palestinian Arabs were thrown out of their land and their houses were destroyed by Israel in 1948, leading subsequently to their being caged into the West Bank and Gaza.

The smoke of burnt tires was meant to block the vision of the Israeli snipers stationed behind the fence, as dozens of protesters have been killed.

Colleagues said Murtaja was not affiliated with Hamas or any other militant group, and there were no Hamas symbols normally seen at the funerals for militants.
