Durant to decline option, re-sign with Warriors

Durant to decline option, re-sign with Warriors

Kevin Durant will reportedly become an unrestricted free agent this summer, but his foray in the market will be extremely short.

"A nine-time All-Star and the reigning NBA Finals MVP, Durant will be turning down a salary of $26.2 million, a figure well below that for a player of his caliber, in order to restructure a new deal with the Warriors, sources said", Haynes reports.

ESPN's Bobby Marks laid out options for Durant, including on where he signs a four-year max contract valued at around $158 million, with the annual pay (in each season) of $35.3 million, $38.2 million, $41 million and $43.8 million. Because he turned down more money, the Warriors were able to retain core veterans Andre Iguodala and Shaun Livingston.

The reigning NBA Finals MVP won his first title with Warriors past year. "But I'm enjoying every moment of it, so I'm not trying to look too far down the line". Since there are no real incentives for Durant or for his team to take such a drastic reduction in pay this time around, it is therefore justified that Durant opt-out to seek for a better contract this time around. Another NBA Finals victory would be the second of Durant's career and second since he's played for Golden State.

We also go over Quinn Cook talking about his new two-year deal after bouncing back and forth between the National Basketball Association and G-League.

Durant plans to give up a guaranteed $26.2 million for next season, but that figure remains modest for an National Basketball Association superstar.

In the former scenario, Durant can opt out after the first year and sign a five-year max deal that would see his salary peak at $49.9 million in his fifth year.

If Durant has no intentions of leaving the Bay Area, the Warriors are desperate to hold onto one of their stars, who is averaging 26.6 points, 5.4 assists and 6.9 rebounds per game this season.
