California governor agrees to send National Guard troops to US-Mexico border

California governor agrees to send National Guard troops to US-Mexico border

Jerry Brown has agreed to President Donald Trump's request to put additional National Guard troops on the border with Mexico, though he will limit their involvement with immigration enforcement efforts.

"Let's be clear on the scope of this mission, " Brown wrote in a letter to the Trump administration.

"It will not be a mission to round up women and children or detain people escaping violence and seeking a better life", Brown said. The governor also said in his letter that he wants to make it clear that there is "no massive wave of migrants pouring into California".

New Mexico is sending 250 National Guard troops to its border.

California's "sanctuary" policies limiting cooperation with US immigration agents have been a target for Trump's ire, and in his most recent weekly address he called the state "a border-free zone where thousands of criminal aliens can roam free".

Meanwhile, the first members of the National Guard in Texas have already made their way to the U.S-Mexico border.

Citing a crisis on the border, Sessions said he had issued an order directing federal prosecutors to put more emphasis on charging people with illegal entry. The quotas take effect October 1. Earlier this month, Oregon Gov. Kate Brown said she would flat-out reject the president's request.

The Democratic governor broke a week of silence Wednesday by agreeing to contribute 400 troops, though not all will be on the border.

"The location of Guard personnel - and number specifically working in support of operations along the border, the coast and elsewhere in the state - will be dictated by the needs on the ground", a spokesperson for the governor's office told The Daily Caller News Foundation in an email.

In a letter to Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis and Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, Brown said he would accept funding from the federal government to increase the state guard by some 400 troops.

The program is now staffed by 250 personnel statewide, including 55 at the California border. He added those were the same reasons he agreed to similar targeted assistance from President Bush and Obama in past years.

In Arizona, Gov. Doug Ducey has so far sent 338 troops to the border, which KJZZ reports are "expected to give air and logistical support, help with reconnaissance and work on border infrastructure".

State government officials in California said Brown's proposed agreement on the troop deployment had been submitted to the federal government for approval.
