All Blacks Sevens win over Fiji at Commonwealth Games

The New Zealand women's Sevens team has earned some measure of revenge for their Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games defeat to Australia, with an extra-time 17-12 win over Australia to claim Commonwealth Games gold on the Gold Coast.

Scotland and Wales men lost their final pool matches, to South Africa and Fiji, and face each other in one of the games to decide 5th to 8th place on Sunday.

Portia Woodman opened the scoring in typical fashion, the World Rugby Women's 15s Player of the Year 2017 racing down the touchline to score her sixth try of the Games but the Black Ferns Sevens were then reduced to five players with first captain Sarah Goss yellow-carded and then Michaela Blyde for a high tackle on Julia Greenshields as she scored the try.

The men had three pool matches yesterday and needing to finish top of the pool to qualify for the semi finals they went three for three with wins over Zambia (54-0), Kenya (40-7) and Canada (33-7).

New Zealand Rugby CEO Steve Tew said it was a proud day on the Gold Coast.

Abigail Brown's side bounced back in style in the bronze medal match against Canada, earning a 19-5 half-time lead as tries from Lydia Thompson, Debbie Fleming and Claire Allan proved just enough to hold off a late charge and triumph 24-19.

The women's final was also characterised by a strong first half performance from New Zealand and some desperate defence before Brazier stepped up to end home hopes of victory. The victor will face Australia in the final.

The historic tournament on the Gold Coast saw the Women's side edge out Australia in extra time thanks to Kelly Brazier's long-range try.

The second half was barely 30 seconds old when Charlotte Caslick raced away to restore Australia's lead once more but it again didn't last long with Naoibasali scoring her second to tie the scores at 10-10.
