Ford opens cat-themed auto vending machine in China

After that is done, all they have to do is pick up the vehicle from the building the companies involved call "super test-drive center".

Post its launch in Guangzhou, Alibaba now plans to extend this vending machine service across the Chinese turf.

Past year in December, Alibaba inked an agreement with Ford Motor to explore ways to leverage mobility and redefine the automotive ownership experience in China.

The giant vending machine stocked full of the latest line of vehicles from Ford is located in Guangzhou, China. Buyers will be given a 3-day test drive before they have to commit to any purchase.

As a side note, if you're wondering what's with the cat thingies that pop up on the roof of the structure, those represent the logo of the Tmall platform, an Alibaba owned Chinese-language website for business-to-consumer online retail.

Alibaba also planning to build similar auto vending machines in Beijing and Hangzhou, while continue exploring collaboration opportunities with Ford in cloud computing, digital marketing, as well as in-car operating systems with AliOS, Alibaba's IoT operating-system developer. They then take a selfie with the app, which is used to confirm their booking at the test-drive centre.

Buying a auto is an expensive decision.

For customers of the auto vending machine, nearly the entire car-buying process happens on their smartphones, through Alibaba's e-commerce apps.

There is no salesperson at the location of the vending machine and everything is done through the app. The vending machine, which is five stories tall, is now located at that city but the companies plan to bring at least two more to other cities. Last year, Autobahn Motors opened a 15 story vehicle vending machine.

It is not the first time that a company opens a vending machine for cars but this one is probably the first to offer test driving. The vending machine debuted with 60 cars on display, including Ferraris and Lamborghinis. At Guangzhou's machine, buyers can also take out one other auto if they are not satisfied with their selections.

Most companies either use over-the-top machines to promote luxury products - like the Ferrari machine in Singapore - or practical ones to sell convenience products - like the crab machine in a Nanjing subway.
