Wall Street higher as consumer and bank stocks gain

The S&P financial index rose 0.5 percent.

Oil-linked shares with big gains included Dow member Chevron, up 3.1 percent, Apache, up 4.7 percent and Schlumberger, up 1.9 percent.

The broad-based S&P 500 gained 0.7 percent to 2,767.56, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index advanced 0.8 percent to 7,211.78.

The Russell 2000 is up 31.96 points, or 2 percent.

USA stock indexes on Friday closed out what has been a stellar start to a calendar year for equity trading.

"I don't think you would've seen a big pop in bank stocks, no one's surprised by these numbers", said Ron Weiner president and founder of RDM financial in Westport Connecticut.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 index opened higher on Friday, extending their run into the record books, as fourth-quarter corporate earnings season kicked off.

Earnings for S&P 500 companies are expected to increase by 11.8 percent on an average, with the biggest contribution from the energy sector, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Consumer discretionary (+1.3%) was the top-performing group, with Lowe's (+5.4%) setting the pace after reports that investor D.E. Shaw has build an active stake in the company. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast core CPI rising 0.2 percent.

The Dow is up 1,083.97 points, or 4.4 percent.

Advancing issues outnumbered decliners on the NYSE by 2,103 to 762. On the Nasdaq, 1,445 issues rose and 969 fell.
