Intel Reports 'Significant Progress' In Patching Chip Security Flaws

Two hardware bugs can be exploited to allow the memory content of a computer to be leaked.

Past couple of days there was this commotion about Spectre and Meltdown vunrabilities in hardware, even Xbox One. Are you anxious about your system's security?

Intel is at the center of the problem because it supplies the processors used in numerous world's PCs. While this may seem to be the case for Meltdown, Spectre is a more widespread and deep-rooted flaw and there is no fix for it as of now.

The chipmaker has said it is "rapidly issuing" updates for all Intel-based computer systems that may have been affected by the flaws.

Tech companies typically withhold details about security problems until fixes are available so that hackers wouldn't have a roadmap to exploit the flaws.

"The potential liability is big for Intel", said Eric Johnson, dean of Vanderbilt University's Owen Graduate School of Management. Besides when you are talking 15 years of chips being affected there was never going to be any way Intel would have done a recall. Meanwhile, studies have found that Spectre affects a large number of the Intel, ARM, and AMD processors that have been produced since the 1990s.

Indeed, as Microsoft and Google have already released fixes for preventing hackers from exploiting these flaws on devices running their software.

The bugs also affect cloud-computing services powering much of the internet.

A memorial service at Our Lady of Lourdes from 10am Saturday had originally been planned for family and close friends only. The opposition Labor Party's last prime minister, Kevin Rudd, tweeted, "Any form of bullying is an assault on our values".

Major cloud services aimed at business customers - including Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud Platform and Microsoft Azure - say they have already patched most of their services and will fix the rest soon.

Unauthorized access will be hard to detect so cloud-computing providers need to act quickly to protect against these vulnerabilities, said Ryan Kalember, senior vice president of cybersecurity at Proofpoint.

"It was made pursuant to a pre-arranged stock sale plan (10b5-1) with an automated sale schedule", the spokesperson said.

Advice from the U.S Computer Emergency Readiness Team's was grim. Experts say it could mean processors require a complete redesign.

That's not to say nothing can be done. Unfortunately, this involves reducing the overall performance of the operating system. These vulnerabilities impact Windows, Linux, iOS, macOS, tvOS, and Android devices.

In addition to PCs, servers, and phones, a wide variety of smart devices will also need patches, noted MachNation analyst Samuel Hale.

Patches either already have been released or are being rushed out by Intel as well as OS and cloud providers including Microsoft, Google, Amazon and Apple. We also send freebies and lots of other goodies exclusively to our email subscribers.
