H&M stores stormed in Africa over 'monkey in the jungle' sweatshirt ad

H&M stores stormed in Africa over 'monkey in the jungle' sweatshirt ad

H&M isn't the first clothing company to come under fire for clothing that can be construed as offensive.

The outrage stemmed from a recent ad photo released by H&M showing a black boy wear a green sweater with the slogan "coolest monkey in the jungle" on it.

Innocent shoppers were forced to flee as activists swept through the stores, which included Africa's flagship H&M stores in the upmarket suburb of Sandton, Johannesburg.

Protesters were wearing red and dancing and singing outside department stores. In videos posted on social media, some are seen pulling down racks and tearing clothes from their shelves and throwing them on the ground. Many people accused the worldwide chain store of racism.

Some curious shoppers walked passed the closed H&M store, wondering what happened.

The singer began his collaboration with H&M in 2017.

Members of a left-wing, youth-oriented political movement stormed H&M stores around the country on January 13. The brand was accused of having a lack of diversity, with virtually all the models used for their advertisements being white.

The firm's spokesperson, Amelia-May Woudstra, said the company was sorry for the ad, "We sincerely apologize for offending customers with an image of a printed hooded top that was published on selected global online channels". We want our marketing to show our fashion in an inspiring way, to convey a positive feeling. "They (H&M) need to spend more money on understanding their customers and also think of their black staff who will have to go to work after what has just happened‚" said Kristiansen. We have temporarily closed our stores in South Africa. People have called the image racist and inappropriate. "We are going to be here, but the security has told us everything is fine", he said.

"We apologise if we have upset anyone as this wasn't our intention".
