BuzzFeed Just Got Slapped With 'Defamation' Lawsuit for Publishing Infamous Trump Dossier

"Enough is enough of the #fake #RussianDossier", Cohen wrote on Twitter.

BuzzFeed published the 35-page report with an accompanying article in January of a year ago, and the state-level suit names the news outlet, its editor-in-chief Ben Smith, reporter Ken Bensinger and editors Miriam Elder and Mark Schoofs as defendants. He is also suing Fusion GPS and its founder, Glenn Simpson.

The dossier, which was produced by the D.C. -based intelligence firm Fusion GPS, relies nearly exclusively on Kremlin-linked sources and has itself been described by experts as a Russian disinformation campaign.

Cohen said he told the panels that he never engaged with, was paid by, or communicated with anyone representing the Russian government, or anyone else, about hacking or interfering with the USA election, hacking the Democratic Party, or about creating fake news stories to assist the Trump campaign or to damage the Hillary Clinton campaign.

The Trump-Russia dossier was first published by BuzzFeed a few days before his inauguration in January, 2017. Cohen said he has never been to Prague and his passport shows no visits to the Czech Republic.

At the same time, Simpson said he was concerned there was a "law enforcement issue" about whether there was an illegal conspiracy to violate campaign laws.

"Over the past year there's been an extraordinary amount of energy expended on the dossier, in the form of investigative resources, by both Democrats and Republicans, and media attention". In fact, Steele was so shocked by what he learned from his sources that he felt obliged to report it to the FBI, Simpson says.

The lawsuit stated that "even though Defendant Buzzfeed expressly acknowledged the unverified (and potentially unverifiable) nature of the Dossier's allegations, Defendant BuzzFeed published the un-redacted Dossier and the Article anyway - without attempting to determine the veracity of these reports with Plaintiff himself".

After the game , Jaguars defensive end Yannick Ngakoue said Bills guard Richie Incognito used "weak racist slurs" during the game. All told, Carolina converted just one of its four opportunities inside the 20-yard line. "You've got to stay poised".

"The dossier is, and continues to be, the subject of active investigations by Congress and intelligence agencies".

We strongly believed that publishing the disputed document whose existence we and others were reporting was in the public interest.

Michael Cohen also filed a second lawsuit against Washington research firm Fusion GPS, the company that hired former spy Christopher Steele to investigate Mr Trump's business dealings with Russian Federation.

One year after BuzzFeed published former MI6 operative Christopher Steele's private intelligence dossier alleging Donald Trump's ties to Russian Federation (sometimes known in certain circles as the "pee dossier"), the website's editor in chief Ben Smith is defending the decision. Fusion GPS disseminated allegations from the dossier to Washington-based reporters for months before BuzzFeed finally published the document. Fusion GPS has told the Washington Post that it "had no prior knowledge" of that meeting and denied any involvement.

The lawsuits were first reported by ABC News.

Russian businessman Aleksej Gubarev filed suit against the website in February.

While Simpson claimed that Steele acted out of alarm and not out of political motivation, that argument was undermined by other parts of Simpson's own testimony that showed that Steele was "concerned" about the reopening of the Clinton email investigation, and a news story that said there was no connection between Trump and Russian Federation.
