American Red Cross asking for donations amid blood shortage

Every day in Hampton Roads, the American Red Cross needs to collect 350 pints of blood.

While there is always a need for all blood types, local blood donation centers have highlighted a critical need for certain types, including Type O negative, which can be transfused to nearly anyone, making it a go-to blood type for emergency responders and doctors in urgent trauma care; Type B negative, which can be transfused to B positive and negative and AB positive and negative patients; and Type AB, which has a plasma type that can be transfused to nearly anyone. This allows generous donors throughout the country to contribute to the national blood supply and potentially help patients locally and in storm-affected areas.

"Patient need at the hospitals we serve never stops", said Amanda Hess, Director, Donor Relations. Candidates must be reliable and have flexible schedules.

Seasonal illnesses and harsh winter weather can often lead to a decline in the number of blood donors who come out to give. "It has to be there right at the time it's needed, and that's why it's so urgently needed right now", DeFrancis notes.
