Samsung's plan to dominate the self-driving auto industry

Samsung and Harman claim the system has been designed in such a way to allow it to be scaled up from Level 3 autonomous technology to Level 4 and then eventually Level 5; the highest rating for driving with human interaction. And as consumer electronics companies don't get much bigger than Samsung, it was only to be expected the South Korean company would unveil its automotive efforts to the world at this year's CES in Las Vegas.

Each new solution was made possible through the HARMAN-Samsung alliance that leverages Samsung's global scale, R&D capabilities, dominance in mobile/TV/semiconductors and distribution channels and HARMAN's leading connected vehicle heritage, relationships, market knowledge and growing community of innovation partners.

"Not only do future cars will change how we drive but they will also innovatively change streets and societies." said President Son Young-kwon of Samsung Electronics' SSIC (Samsung Strategy and Innovation Center). The system will be able to give lane departure warning, forward collision warnings, detect pedestrians, and have support for automatic emergency braking.

An ecosystem of partners and solutions to further build out the Samsung open autonomous platform, along with a showcase of our first implementation of this together with TTTech. "Building an autonomous platform requires close collaboration across industry, as one company can not deliver on this enormous opportunity alone".

Samsung and Harman also revealed plans for the industry first introduction of 5G in-car internet connectivity.

The show is exactly the right place for Samsung to unveil its first components for autonomous driving and infotainment solutions that it has been developing with Harman International, which it bought out around a year ago as part of its major push into the vehicle electronics market. How long until the yellow light turns red?
