The figures released by the Irish Nurses' and Midwives' Organisation show that 592 patients were denied a hospital bed across the country.

The INMO said there were 483 patients awaiting admission to a hospital bed on trolleys in emergency departments or on wards on Friday, down from almost 600 on Thursday, and a record 677 on Wednesday.

St Luke's Hospital in Co Kilkenny is the most overcrowded hospital in the country today - there are 57 patients awaiting a bed in the hospital today.

The figure exceeded the previous record of 612 set on January 3 a year ago.

He said: "There are very few people in the ED's (Emergency Departents) who don't need to be there and there isn't anyone lying in a trolley who doesn't need to be there".

He said that he will be updated by each hospital group CEO on the situation tomorrow.

Overall in 2017, 98,981 admitted patients were recorded to have been awaiting a hospital bed, University Hospital Limerick topped the list with the highest annual number of 8869.

Smaller hospitals such as Our Lady's Hospital in Navan increased from 595 in 2016 to 2435 in 2017 and Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe recorded 1569 trolley figures compared with 892 in 2016.

MUH Clinical Director Dr Kieran O'Connor said: "In this context, visiting is being restricted to the hospital in the interest of patient safety".

Tadhg Daly, the organisation's chief executive, said: "It is essential the capacity of nursing homes within the community is fully realised to facilitate timely discharges from our acute hospitals".

The Health Service Executive has urged people to get the flu vaccination and said the number of reported cases of flu had increased in the week before Christmas and it "is now actively circulating in Ireland".

Generally, the flu season starts in January.

Nearly 200 people have been hospitalised with the flu and a small number - less than 10- of people have died.
