LA man wanted by Calgary Police for alleged swatting incident

The Los Angeles suspect in a fatal swatting incident in the United States has been charged by Calgary police for a similar, but non-fatal, hoax.

Dispatchers in Calgary received a 911 call from a man who claimed he shot his father and was holding his mom and younger brother hostage, Calgary Police said in a news release. The caller allegedly led officers to believe the incident occurred in the 2300 block of 17b Street S.W. Tactical unit and patrol officers attended the home and evacuated nearby units.

"While officers were on scene trying to confirm the reported information, Calgary 911 received another call from a female who lived at the address, who believed she was the victim of a swatting call", said Peter Siegenthaler of the Calgary police service. Calgary police issued warrants against Barriss for public mischief, fraud and mischief.

A similar bogus call on December 28 about a shooting and kidnapping led police in Wichita, Kansas, to rush to a home where Andrew Finch, 28, was shot and killed after opening his door.

A woman in Calgary was targeted by Tyler Barriss on December 22 "because of her online persona", cops said in a press release on Tuesday. The woman exited the home and officers confirmed the initial report of a shooting and hostage situation was false, police said.

Barriss is also accused of making a hoax emergency call that led to the fatal police shooting of a Kansas man. The call was determined to be hoax and investigators determined the caller was likely targeting someone inside the building whom he had been in contact with online.

ANC Youth League will oppose a Zuma recall
Deputy chief justice Raymond Zondo, selected by the chief justice will head the commission, Zuma said in the statement. But talks of a motion to remove Zuma being forced into the agenda have been gaining momentum.

Barriss has been charged in Kansas with making a false alarm - a felony.

Tyler Barriss appears for an extradition hearing at Los Angeles Superior Court last week.

.

In recent years, he served time in Los Angeles County Jail after prosecutors charged him with making fake bomb threats that prompted evacuations of a Glendale television station and two schools. After a brief exchange, Finch was shot after moving his hands toward his waistband, Wichita police said.

Barriss, the suspect in the Calgary and Kansas swatting attacks, has been accused of being a swatter for hire who was paid for his attacks.

"Swatting calls have the potential to create significant risks for both public and officer safety and can require an extensive amount of resources to respond and investigate", it stated.
