Controversial former sheriff in Arizona says he is running for Senate

Joe Arpaio, the controversial sheriff beloved by immigration hardliners who was pardoned of criminal contempt charges by President Donald Trump past year, announced Tuesday he will run for U.S. Senate in Arizona.

Joe Arpaio, the longtime Phoenix-area sheriff whose headline-grabbing approach to immigration made him an ally of President Donald Trump, will run in the 2018 Republican primary to replace Sen.

After 12 months of constant attacks against the communities of color and immigrants in the country on the part of the Trump Administration, the controversial ex-sheriff of Maricopa County, Joe Arpaio, has chose to add his name to the race for the Senate in 2018.

The former sheriff will run for the Senate seat now occupied by Jeff Flake, who announced his retirement in October with an emotional speech excoriating President Trump. Jeff Flake, who announced in October that he would not seek re-election.

President Trump, who once called Arpaio "a great American patriot", spared the former sheriff a jail sentence after Arpaio was found guilty of ignoring a 2011 court order to stop traffic patrols targeting suspected illegal immigrants.

"I think at this point in his career, you have to question the motive behind anything he's doing where there's money involved", Setmayer said.

"I think I can make a difference. At least I got the guts to face all the detractors, the Democratic Party, you name it, so he can have his opinion, I got mine, but It doesn't bother me at all".

Arpaio is 85 years old, and older than all of the current USA senators.

They settled for four field goal attempts on those drives, one of which kicker Graham Gano surprisingly missed from 25-yards. Sunday's game will mark the first time since the 2009 NFC championship game the Vikings and the Saints meet in the playoffs.

Arpaio's website has a disclaimer that says "Paid for By Sheriff Joe Arpaio for U.S. Senate", but that committee doesn't appear in the FEC's database, either.

Mr Arpaio said immigrants should be proud of where they come from and that, "everybody would be happy, you deport them and then let them come back with all their education here".

Trump pardoned Arpaio in August after the former Maricopa County sheriff was convicted of contempt of court over his practice of racially profiling Latinos. "Why don't they say that I should make a good candidate". The House of Representatives lawmaker is expected to announce her run on Friday, CNN reported.

Arizona, while a fiercely Republican state, could be an uphill battle for Arpaio. His 24-year tenure as a sheriff in Maricopa County, Ariz. brought droves of controversy, most notably over his construction of an open-air "tent city" prison that he once referred to as a concentration camp.

Arpaio's reputation for being tough on crime was undermined by his failure to adequately investigate more than 400 sex-crimes cases, including dozens of child molestation reports, over a three-year period ending in 2007.

"The truth is there is only one reason why Jeff Flake has decided not to run again, it's because of Kelli Ward", he said.

"There's hardly been an election cycle from the early 90s that Sheriff Joe hasn't talked about running statewide", Flake told Tapper.
