ANC Youth League will oppose a Zuma recall

South Africa's military veterans have urged the new African National Congress leadership to deal withformer ANC leader Jacob Zuma's future as the leader of the country as soon as possible. In doing so‚ there should be "no place for vendettas and vindictiveness", uMkhonto weSizwe Military Veterans' Association (MKMVA) president Kebby Maphatsoe said on Monday.

The rand weakened in midday trade yesterday to its worst in almost three weeks after the ANC said an early exit for President Jacob Zuma had not been discussed at a party meeting.

Earlier in the week, three of the NEC's 86 voting members, who also asked not to be identified, said the matter would be raised.

"The allegations that the state has been wrestled out of the hands of its real owner' the people of South Africa' is of paramount importance and are therefore deserving of finality and certainty'" Zuma said in a statement yesterday.

The 75-year-old president has faced and denied numerous corruption allegations since taking office in 2009 and has survived several votes of no-confidence in parliament.

But talks of a motion to remove Zuma being forced into the agenda have been gaining momentum.

He said further delays in appointing the commission would make the public doubt the government's commitment to dismantling "all forms of corruption" and entrench "the perception" that the state has been captured by private interests. Deputy chief justice Raymond Zondo, selected by the chief justice will head the commission, Zuma said in the statement.

South Africa's main oppostion Democratic Alliance (DA) cheered the creation of the probe.

In 2016 a damning report questioned Zuma's dealings with the Guptas, a wealthy family of Indian origin, who allegedly were granted influence over his cabinet appointments.

There has been widespread speculation that Zuma is being put under pressure to step down as president, giving Ramaphosa room to assume control and work towards the presidential bid for 2019.

This is in contrast to the meeting at which former president Thabo Mbeki's recall was discussed, which reportedly went on for a day and ended after midnight.

Zuma, however, has shown no intentions of resigning.
