All Mac and iOS devices affected by Meltdown and Spectre exploits

It's always something with these devices now.

Spectre: Like Meltdown, Spectre allows for the leaking of memory. These vulnerabilities affect all x86 Intel CPUs shipped in the last 23 years.

Spectre casts a wider net and also brings AMD and ARM hardware into the fold, alongside Intel. Reports now indicate that the problem affects a much broader range of consumer electronic devices, as well as information hosted on servers in cloud computer networks.

Meltdown and Spectre "exploit critical vulnerabilities in modern processors", according to the official webpage on the matter, and give programs the ability to steal data being processed by your computer.

And Microsoft has already released fixes for many of its services. Here is a guide to what you need to know and what you can do. The best thing to do is to check your provider has done the necessary security patches and always risk assess the information you are storing on these systems. PC hardware enthusiasts everywhere are running around screaming, and if you aren't hyper-tuned into the world of hardware you may not understand why. If not, it's time to start updating.

Apple has acknowledged a flaw that could lead hackers to hit all iPhone and Mac devices. The next update, now in development, should provide additional protections.

Additionally, the company said it has released updates to patch iOS 11.2, macOS 10.13.2 and tvOS 11.2 to protect against Meltdown. "Google pushed out an update for Chrome OS on December 15". Otherwise, a new patched version of Chrome is coming out January 23. People with Google-supported Android phones including Nexus and Pixel devices will get that update, but others will have to wait for security updates from their manufacturers.

Experts do add that the fixes will slow down performance on a computer especially devices that are over 5-years-old. A patch for Chrome browser will be available later this month, and Chromebook users will have to wait for their update to be released. Next, you'll want to update your anti-virus software and be sure you're running the latest version of your web browser, both which can keep you safe from dangerous files that might use these exploits.

Additionally, it reminded customers to uphold safe practices to ensure they are protecting themselves against potential threats. "But researchers warn that the weaknesses could be exploited via Javascript - meaning it might not be long before we see attacks that leverage the vulnerabilities being stitched into hacked or malicious Web sites".
