Israeli forces arrest 36 Palestinians in rallies across Gaza Strip

Two rockets launched at Israel from the Gaza Strip triggered air raid alarms in the area of the southern city of Sderot at approximately 7 p.m. local time.

After the assault from Gaza, Israeli jets targeted military sites belonging to Hamas and Islamic Jihad.

No group in Gaza took immediate responsibility for the launch.

The attacks come one day after President Donald Trump controversially announced that the United States would recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital and begin the process of moving the U.S. Embassy there.

The Hamas leader also called for strong unity among all Palestinian factions, and "for a unified stance to counter this oppression and aggression".

Many outraged Palestinians demonstrated in the Gaza Strip, waving Palestinian flags, photos of Al-Aqsa Mosque and banners proclaiming Jerusalem as "our eternal capital" and calling it a "red line".

Medical sources in Gaza told Ma'an that Muhammad Saleh Haddaf was severely injured and left bed ridden after an Israeli airstrike hit his home on 8 August 2014, killing four of his family members and injuring several others.

A lengthy list of US allies, regional powers and Palestinian politicians warned Trump against recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital in the lead-up to his announcement on Wednesday, saying that it would inflame tensions and provoke violence.

The Palestinians seek Israeli-annexed east Jerusalem, captured by Israel in 1967, as a future capital.
