Tennessee Nearing Deal to Make Alabama DC Jeremy Pruitt Next Head Coach

The Vols have offered Alabama defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt its head coaching position, Knoxville, Tenn., radio station WNML reported Wednesday night.

Pruitt would put the kibosh on Tennessee's embarrassing coaching search in wake of Butch Jones' firing. Schlabach states that Martin was contacted by Tennessee athletics director Phillip Fulmer, but he was never interviewed for the job.

Pruitt did not fly back from NY with the Tennessee entourage per multiple sources; instead, the relentless and multi-time national recruiter of the year departed to continue his recruiting efforts for the Tide.

However, some Vol fans hoping that national championship quarterback Tee Martin would be lured from Southern Cal to Tennessee as Pruitt's offensive coordinator, may be disappointed.

Not surprisingly, Pruitt took what was already an elite Alabama defense under Smart and helped it maintain its standing. This year, Alabama leads the nation in scoring defense and yards per play.

It appears as though Tennessee is focusing in on a trio of SEC defensive coordinators: Alabama's Jeremy Pruitt, Georgia's Mel Tucker and Auburn's Kevin Steele. He was initially there from 2007 to 2012, the last three seasons as defensive backs coach.

Pruitt's first coordinator job came at Florida State in 2013.

He named his son, born in May, after former Alabama linebackers Ryan Anderson and Reuben Foster.

Friday, the school hired former football coach Phil Fulmer to take Currie's place as athletic director after Fulmer was reportedly attempting to exert influence on Currie's coaching search. Should the Vols hire him, he would be the sixth former defensive coordinator leading a team in the SEC East - the third to hold that role under Nick Saban (Will Muschamp, Kirby Smart).

This would be at least the second meeting with Pruitt, according to GoVols247.
