Kenyan opposition leader warned against treason

Kenya's Attorney General Githu Muigai speaks during a press conference in Nairobi, Kenya September 22, 2017.

Odinga, head of the National Super Alliance, plans to hold a "people's president" inauguration ceremony on Tuesday after President Uhuru Kenyatta took office on November 28 following a bitterly disputed election.

"The punishment of committing treason is death".

"The criminal law of the Republic of Kenya stipulates that this sort of process is high treason".

Speaking at Sheria House on Thursday, the AG warned that persons that will facilitate or be involved in the event will face the full wrath of the law.

So far, 12 Kenyan counties have passed motions supporting the formation of a people's assembly, a lot of them counties that had backed the opposition in Kenya's protracted voting.

Kenya's main opposition group says police have detained one of its advisers ahead of a planned protest ceremony to stage a mock inauguration of Raila Odinga as president.

Odinga and Kenyatta faced off in an election in August that Kenyatta won.

Odinga successfully challenged Kenyatta's August re-election but then boycotted the new vote in October, demanding electoral reforms.

Mr Kenyatta was inaugurated last week.

Odinga also repeated his accusations against Kenya security forces, saying dozens of people have been killed in the months of election unrest and "nobody is talking about it". Don't come and shout at us, and tell us that we are going to violate the constitution. "Which constitution my foot!" he sternly said.

"We thought we had friends but we were wrong and now we know they are enemies".
