As in previous years, the company's App Store editors have selected the best apps and games of the year for every software platform - iOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS.

Congrats to mindfulness and meditation app Calm and the $9.99 Affinity Photo from Serif Labs for taking home the coveted trophies, not to mention the little-known Splitter Critters and Thekla's The Witness for being named the 2017 iPhone and iPad Game of the Year respectively. As we previously noted, Bitmoji has seen explosive growth over the a year ago and a half as it's steadily integrated the app's customizable emoji into Snapchat.

Apple highlights hat 2017 has been a "big year" for apps, games, and trends in app culture.

What sets this year's lists apart is the increased reliance on editorial curation and different story formats used to showcase winners.

This year, people have been really digging Drake's More Life album, NPR's Fresh Air podcast, and the movie Moana, according to new data from Apple. Taylor's Swift album Reputation is already the number 3 best-selling album for 2017, despite debuting only a few weeks ago.

This year's most popular app in India, however, is topped by WhatsApp, followed by YouTube, Facebook, PayTm, and Facebook Messenger.

There's some predictable overlap between the two tech titans' lists of 2017 top sellers, as Game of Thrones, for instance, dominates both Apple and Google's latest yearly TV show charts.
