Florida man, 20, reportedly behind massive hack at Uber

Uber, the ride-hailing smartphone app, paid a Florida hacker $100,000 to destroy data in the company's 2016 hack that resulted in the breach of 57 million users, Reuters reported. Uber allegedly paid hackers a $100,000 ransom to delete the data and not disclose what had happened to the media and public.

The hacker was a 20-year-old man from Florida who lived with his mother. As per a report by Reuters, the payment to the hacker was made via Uber's bug bounty program hosted by HackerOne.

Uber declined to comment on the matter to the news outlet.

Previous-CEO Travis Kalanick had stepped down in June 2017.

HackerOne is the host of the bug bounty program of Uber, but does not have control over managing it, and does not play any role in deciding if payouts are appropriate or the size they are.

Security professionals have said that rewarding a hacker that stole data would be far outside normal rules of the bounty program, where payments typically are made in the range of between $5,000 and $10,000.

SC to hear plea for interim relief on mandatory linking of Aadhaar
The Center government has informed the Supreme Court that it will extend the deadline mandatory for to linking Aadhaar card . Attorney General K K Venugopal said that the last date for linking Aadhaar with mobile services will remain unchanged.

The payment was made through a bug hunter scheme called HackerOne, created to reward security researchers who identify weaknesses and issues in a company's software.

Apparently, the hacker had to sign a non-disclosure agreement to keep his trap shut about the whole incident, and Uber sent cybersecurity boffins around to make sure the swiped data was indeed purged from his computer.

The most interesting part, which is hacker's description according to a source - "Living with his mom in a small home trying to help pay the bills". The pilfered data included personal information such as names, email addresses and driver's license numbers, but not Social Security numbers and credit card information, the company said.

Bug bounty programs are designed mainly to give security researchers an incentive to report weaknesses they uncover in a company's software.

Some companies choose not to report more aggressive intrusions to authorities on the grounds that it can be easier and more effective to negotiate directly with hackers in order to limit any harm to customers. The breach occurred in October 2016, but was not revealed until last month.
