EC to sue Czech Republic, Poland and Hungary over migrants

The European Commission on Thursday announced it is taking the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland to the European Court of Justice for failing to comply with mandatory quotas for accepting asylum seekers. The plan involved the relocation of 160,000 people.

The EU's executive Commission sought reasons why but was given no satisfactory explanations.

The move was an attempt to relieve pressure on Greece and Italy where the vast majority of migrants were arriving.

According to the Commission, Poland and Hungary haven't taken in any refugees since September 2015, when European Union member states pledged to relocate a total of 160,000 migrants from overstretched Greece and Italy within two years.

The commission launched infringement procedures against the three states in June and warned them last month that further action was likely.

The bloc, however, found the trio's response unsatisfactory, saying that "the three countries have given no indication that they will contribute to the implementation of the relocation decision".

Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis told the BBC he opposed the relocation plan and that it fueled anti-migrant sentiment in the country. The Commission also took legal proceedings over Hungary's asylum law to the next step, by issuing a formal request for Budapest to comply with European Union law.

Passed at the height of the migrant crisis in 2015, the controversial rule dictates that asylum seekers who illegally breach Europe's borders be "fairly" redistributed across the bloc through a quota system.

Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Konrad Szymanski said Warsaw was "ready to defend its position in court".

Hungary has introduced an education law that could shut the Soros-founded Central University in Budapest, which has always been seen as a hostile bastion of liberalism by Orban's right-wing government.

Mr Soros has a strained relationship with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

In a separate statement, the commission said that the laws on foreign non-governmental organisations "indirectly discriminate and disproportionately restrict donations from overseas to civil society organisations".
