Democrats threaten government shutdown over 'Dreamers' program

Or the GOP-led Congress will force Donald Trump to shut down the government on Saturday.

Congressional leaders hope to use the two weeks afforded by the stopgap spending bill to work out an overall deal and attach it to another short-term spending bill that would be needed by December 22 to continue federal spending into January.

If Paul Ryan is unable to convince the far-right portion of his own party to vote with the rest of Republicans, they'll be "forced" to work in a bipartisan manner with Democrats to come to an agreement. Conservatives are asking for a commitment leadership does not believe it can give them: a promise to "hold the line" and refuse Senate Democrats' demands for increased spending on non-defense programs. They are looking to protect the Dreamers, who fall under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

Those safeguards ended three months ago, but Trump has said he could restore them, according to The Associated Press.

Despite incendiary words from President Donald Trump, Congress seemed on track Wednesday to approving legislation that would avert a partial government shutdown over the weekend as all sides seemed ready to avert a confrontation - for now.

He added, "They want to have illegal immigrants pouring into our country, bringing with them crime".

Pelosi has echoed the sentiment, and said last week "we want to keep government open". "We want to have a great, attractive crime-free country".

His comments drew a tweet from House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., who called Trump "the only person talking about a government shutdown". The written statement said Trump was glad the two top Democrats had made a decision to "put their responsibility to the American people above partisanship" and said Trump was anticipating productive talks between "leaders who put their differences aside".

The Democrats tweeted their hope that the president will "go into this meeting with an open mind, rather than deciding that an agreement can't be reached beforehand".

Mr. Trump referred to his lunch guests, who included frequent Trump critic Sen. He said Democrats are in an "untenable position" if they push the immigration issue to the point of a government shutdown.

'So the Democrats maybe will want to shutdown the country cause they want people flowing into our country, and I want people coming into our country, but I want to vet those people, and I want to vet them very carefully, ' Trump said, 'because we don't want to have radical Islamic terrorism in this country, and we don't want to have crime in this country'.

That, however, is not an issue impacting current budget talks.

"There is a better chance of going to the 30th than the 22nd, but no commitment", Representative Mark Meadows, chairman of the Freedom Caucus, told reporters. "Any distraction from that is a problem".

Federal workers demonstrate against the government shutdown in front of the US Capitol in Washington on October 4, 2013.

Government funding will expire on Friday, and if Republicans and Democrats can't agree on a spending package for the next fiscal year, federal agencies will cease to operate until lawmakers agree on how to continue funding them. Republicans control the chamber by 52-48, but need 60 vote for passage of most spending measures.

Top Republicans are adamant about not sparking a federal shutdown that would deal the latest blow to a party that has strained all year to show it can govern effectively. Even so, top Republicans expressed confidence that they'd approve the short-term measure this week, with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., saying, "We will pass it before the end of the week".
