Ben Stokes named in England squad for ODI series

Ben Stokes named in England squad for ODI series

Stokes is now banned from worldwide cricket while British authorities probe his alleged involvement in a late-night fight outside a Bristol nightclub, and it remained in doubt whether he would play.

Opener Alex Hales has also been named in the squad after he was recently cleared of any wrongdoing in the Bristol incident in September, which led to the arrest of Stokes.

The first one-day global between England and Australia begins on January 15 in Melbourne.

"Whenever he comes back that's going to be a bit of a circus".

He did better against Auckland on Wednesday, hitting 34 from 41 deliveries as he shakes off the rust.

After making just two runs and had figures of 0-49 off nine overs in a defeat to Otago, he got off to a promising start in his second match. It will be decided at the point, if Stokes is to be reinstated to the national team and, if possible, for the remainder of the Ashes series.

Stokes, who is now playing for Canterbury in New Zealand, is not a part of England's Ashes squad and is awaiting the result of the ongoing police investigation following a nightclub brawl on September 25.

The banished England allrounder joined the New Zealand side on a short-term deal last week and debuted on Sunday. He was subsequently overlooked during the selection of the squad for the Ashes, which England now trail 0-2. We won't know it actually until it comes along.

"We've been playing some good one-day cricket and Jonny Bairstow and Jason Roy at the top of the order have played well", England coach, Trevor Bayliss, said. There's been a fair bit of scrutiny that's come along with it in the first five or six weeks (of England's Ashes tour) as well.

"The two openers we had did very well and it would be hard to go against them", Bayliss was quoted as saying by the Guardian.

Asked about the timing of any clarification of Stokes' situation, Bayliss said: "I've got absolutely no idea". "I can't see any changes there personally".

"Hales has a bit to do to get back in the team".

Bairstow, Joe Root, Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes and Jake Ball are the only members of England's test squad who will stay on for the ODI series.
