The road remains sealed off for a forensic examination and will remain closed to traffic until this afternoon.

There had been a number of crashes along the road in recent years, he said.

They are understood to have been trapped in the auto when emergency services arrived.

The four are all believed to be from IL and had flown into Shannon Airport earlier yesterday for the funeral of a relative in Co Wexford.

Initial indications are that several of the deceased are U.S. nationals believed to have been holidaying in Ireland.
