Fairytale romance: Japanese princess gives up her royal status to marry commoner

Japanese Emperor Akihito's oldest grandchild, Princess Mako, 25, said on Sunday she will marry Kei Komuro, who she met while the pair were classmates at Tokyo's International Christian University.

Nobuyasu Sato, who was Komuro's homeroom teacher when he was a fifth and sixth grader at an elementary school affiliated with Kunitachi College of Music, said Komuro was a "tender-hearted child" and that his caring attitude to the princess at the couple's press conference showed that his nature has not changed.

A series of related rituals, including a betrothal ceremony known as "Nosai no Gi", will be carried out before the couple's wedding, which is expected to take place in autumn next year at the earliest.

Princess Mako has a master's degree in art museum and gallery studies and is a researcher at a museum at the University of Tokyo. Komuro shared how they're distance helped them and became an opportunity to deepen their relationship. Komuro proposed in 2013 and is well liked by the royal family. The princess immediately accepted the marriage proposal.

"I was aware since my childhood that I'll leave a royal status once I marry", she said at a student talk in Shibuya, Tokyo.

A Japanese princess will be cast out of the royal enclave when she marries her commoner betrothed.

"I would like to have a family that is always calm and peaceful".

The Princess will be the first to lose royal status since 2014, when the emperor's daughter, Princess Noriko married. He is the eldest son of Toshikatsu Komuro, a former employee of the Yokohama city government, who died in 2002, and his wife Kayo, 51.

People who know the princess, the eldest granddaughter of Emperor Akihito, through her official duties also congratulated the couple.

According to Yamamoto, the Emperor and Empress appeared to be feeling deeply impressed.

The 26-year-old princess will marry a commoner named Kei Komuro. This was the first time for Komuro to meet with the Emperor and the Empress.

She has since introduced him to her parents, Prince Akishino - second in line to the Chrysanthemum throne - and Princess Kiko, as someone she wished to "share her future with".

The Imperial Household Agency first said there were plans underway for the couple's engagement.

The announcement was originally expected in July, but was postponed after a rain disaster hit western Japan. The princess attended the University of Edinburgh, while Komuro, 25, attended the University of California.
