Verizon splits up its unlimited plan and throttles video quality on phones

"RootMetrics confirmed it again last month". Sprint said in June it was offering free unlimited data, talk and text for a year to consumers who bring their own devices in a promotion aimed at Verizon subscribers.

Well, that's all out the window.

The Verge has a good granular breakdown of what the new data plans mean, but the main sticking point is that on smartphones, video quality won't rise above 480p, and on tablets it won't go above 720p.

Following this morning's news, we have to ask, are you sticking with Verizon? Simply put, I don't think Verizon's network can keep up.

The US operator has overhauled its data plans, axing its unlimited wireless offer in favour of three different plans, with video streaming limited to 480p on the cheapest plan, Go Unlimited. If everyone is streaming video over the network while waiting at the airport, for example, that's going to put the crunch on the network. T-Mobile's One Plus plan goes from $80 to $200 and includes similar features with a slowdown threshold of 32 GB. That resolution has fewer pixels so you don't see as many details.

Effective tomorrow, August 23, the No. 1 carrier in the United States is offering three unlimited data plans instead of one. Unfortunately, it is more hard for wireless operators to consistently deliver specific data speeds in its service areas. At the time, Verizon pinned the issue on "network testing" that was done on a limited basis. However, you will be throttled when Verizon's network is congested, regardless if you're taking up a lot of bandwidth or not. These slowdowns do not care about time or accumulated data usage - it does not matter whether you consumed 5GB or 50GB, or whether you're just at the start of a billing cycle or not. VZ, has restructured and modernized its unlimited wireless data plans, so as to reach out to customers' more diversified needs.

Verizon is making some adjustments to its unlimited plans for new and current customers that inch us closer to the world in which buying a mobile subscription will feel as complicated as buying health insurance.

With the Go Unlimited plan, a single line will cost you $75 - $5 less than the current unlimited plan Verizon offers.

The "Beyond Unlimited" plan starts at $85 for one line.

Verizon claims that there is not much difference between 720p and 1080p on phones and tablets!

It's upsetting that Verizon has decided to make this move.

This isn't a made-up controversy, by the way. Customers that are now signed up for a plan can keep it, but even for them some conditions will change. The plan also includes a new throttling for mobile hotspot users that caps browsing speeds at a paltry 600Kbps.

The Beyond Unlimited plan limits phone streaming to 720p and tablets to 1080p. Video streaming while tethered is also limited to 1080p.

But Verizon's gone about the changes in a bad way. For new customers tomorrow to get the same level of service as new customers today will cost $5 more per month, and everyone else is suddenly finding the video they thought they were paying to access throttled down. Previously, customers could only get up to 10 lines of unlimited data on Verizon.
