Sony Develops Magnetic Tape Storage Technology with the Industry's Highest*1 Recording Areal

Sony Develops Magnetic Tape Storage Technology with the Industry's Highest*1 Recording Areal

They have been able to store 330 terabytes of uncompressed data on a tiny cartridge that's small enough to fit in the palm of your hand.

The new cartridge is a far cry from the original magnetic tape drives introduced over 50 years ago which typically used reels of half-inch wide tape and which could typically store about 2 MB of data per square inch. Areal recording density refers to the amount of information that can be stored in a given area of surface.

The cartridge uses prototype sputtered magnetic tape, which is able to carry around 20 times more data than now available commercial tape drives. That's six times more storage than the world's largest hard drive.

The prototype used in the experiment, a so-called sputtered magnetic tape, can hold 20 times as much data as any tape that's now commercially available, IBM said.

Sometimes it's easy to forget that we used to store all our data on magnetic tape.

"This really demonstrates the potential to continue scaling tape technology, basically at historical rates of doubling the capacity every two years, at least for the next 10 years", IBM Research's Dr Mark Lantz said.

This new breakthrough could extend the life of tape as a valid storage medium significantly and make it practical for the cloud era, too, IBM said. The only catch is that it uses a storage technique that you probably thought was long dead: magnetic tape.

While the manufacture of sputtered tape can cost more than current commercial tape drives, Eleftheriou says its high capacity makes the price per terabyte very "attractive". The technology introduced in Japan increases the storage capacity by 165 million times. A newly developed processing technology that reduces impurity gas is used in conjunction with sputter deposition, a method of forming a nano-grained magnetic layer with an average grain size of 7 nm, thereby resulting in extended tape length.

Meanwhile, IBM's research team developed a new read head just 48-nanometers in size that was capable of accurately reading the magnetic particles on Sony's new tape, as well as technology allowing for precise control of the tape as it flows through the machine.
