Facebook's Artificial Intelligence Creates its Own Language; Baffles Developers

Facebook abandoned an experiment after two artificially intelligent programs appeared to be chatting to each other in a odd language only they understood.

The conversation between the two robots took place in the context of an experiment carried out in June 2017 by researchers affiliated with Facebook.

Although some reports insinuate that the bots had at this point invented a new language in order to elude their human masters, a better explanation is that the neural networks had simply modified human language for the purposes of more efficient interaction.

The bots certainly won't be taking over the world with their incomprehensible language.

The pair of bots were supposed to communicate exclusively in English, but instead created a new language for themselves.

So when media outlets began breathlessly re-reporting a weeks-old story that Facebook's AI-trained chatbots "invented" their own language, it's not surprising the story caught more attention than it did the first time around.

Bob: i can i i everything else ...

Over the weekend, Facebook was left with no choice but to shut down its artificial intelligence system after chatbots started talking in their own language.

Update: There's a story circulating today about Facebook pulling the plug on an AI experiment, after its agents went rogue and started speaking in a private language. One tech site, for example, claims the system was shut down "before it evolves into Skynet". The Sun, going after a similar angle, quotes a United Kingdom robotics expert as saying: "anyone who thinks this is not risky has got their head in the sand".

According to initial reports from Techtimes, Facebook was forced to shut down its latest AI system because it started to pose a possible threat.

"Balls have zero to me to me to me to me to me to me to me to me to". Could this be a more worrisome discovery if the bots were negotiating with something more serious than hypothetical books and balls? "Like if I say "the" five times, you interpret that to mean I want five copies of this item".

"There was no reward to sticking to English language", Batra told Fast Company in a July 14 interview. The AI seemed to soon realize that English expressions weren't necessarily required for the task which lead to the creation of the new language which made working easier for the chatbots. Renowned physicist and cosmologist, Stephen Hawking also has his reservations when it comes to the development of artificial intelligence.

The bots were created as part of a program to teach computers and machines how to negotiate, while the ultimate goal was to develop personalized "digital assistants" who would be able to communicate with people.

"The new agents held longer conversations with humans, in turn accepting deals less quickly".
