In protest, artist stencils hate speech outside Twitter office

Much to Shapira's unfortunate amusement, Twitter handled the cleanup much like they do with these hate speech incidents on their own site.

A German-Israeli artist who accused Twitter of failing to tackle anti-Semitic and racist hate speech has taken revenge by stenciling offending tweets outside the company's office in Hamburg.

Twitter is now taking action on 10 times as many abusive accounts compared with the same time past year, the company added.

The comedian chose to act by producing stencils of the most offensive tweets and spray painting them outside Twitter's offices so that its employees would have to see the posts as they entered the building.

"Germany needs a final solution to Islam", read one of the tweets. Sensitivity surrounding the callous phenomenon of online hate speech is heightened as memories of World War Two and the Holocaust live on, and legal ramifications are being ramped up accordingly.

Twitter said on Wednesday that it had "nothing new to share" about how it planned to police the network under the new German law, instead pointing to its previously announced tools and features for handling hateful content.

Shapira applauded Facebook which, in contrast, removed 80 per cent of the comments he had reported during the same six-month period.

A study published this year in Germany by Jugendschutz.net, which promotes safe use of the internet for children, found that Facebook and Twitter had failed to meet a target of removing 70 percent of hate speech within 24 hours.

This isn't the first time Shapira's visceral condemnations of disrespectful online phenomena have hit headlines.

Shapira spray-painted 30 tweets in total outside the company's office, along with the message "Hey Twitter, delete this c**p". Others remained visible awhile longer. "If Twitter forces me to see those things, then they'll have to see them too".
