Malaysia among Asia-Pacific countries with most new AIDS infections

Malaysia among Asia-Pacific countries with most new AIDS infections

The findings, conducted in the US, Germany, Canada, Spain and France, were presented at the annual meeting of the International Aids Society in Paris.

The first tantalizing case was the so-called "Mississippi Boy" who began anti-HIV treatment 30 hours after birth.

For the next eight years the child didn't receive any antiretroviral medicine, but a follow-up analysis of stored blood samples taken during the interim showed that the virus had not returned. It also said five hard-hit African countries now provide lifelong AIDS drugs to 95 percent of pregnant and breast-feeding women with the virus. The family is said to be "really delighted" when they were told that the child will be given several procedures which the doctors hope to reduce HIV or completely eradicate it.

A long-acting injectable antiretroviral therapy may be just as effective as a daily oral dose in treating HIV, a trial has shown.

"To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of sustained control of HIV in a child enrolled in a randomized trial of ART interruption following treatment early in infancy", said Avy Violari, co-leader of the study.

"We believe there may have been other factors in addition to early treatment that contributed to HIV remission in this child‚" said Tiemessen.

"Further study is needed to learn how to induce long-term HIV remission in infected babies", Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), said in a statement.

When people were diagnosed with HIV they were initially given oral therapy to bring the virus under control.

Eastern and southern Africa, which accounts for more than half of all people living with the HIV virus, have seen AIDs-related deaths decline by as much as 42 per cent and new HIV infections by 29 per cent, including a 56 per cent drop in new infections among children.

The girl, who researchers did not identify, started on HIV drugs when she was 2 months old and stopped 40 weeks later. The level of HIV in their blood will increase, unless they change to a different treatment regimen, which could be more expensive - and, in many countries, still harder to obtain.

None had the rare mutation, known as delta 32, that produces immune system cells lacking the receptors to which HIV attaches.

Despite much improved access to antiretroviral (ARV) drugs in sub-Saharan Africa, an "unacceptably" high number of people are developing AIDS and dying due to drug resistance, treatment being interrupted and late diagnoses, the medical charity said.

Other similar cases include a French woman aged roughly 20 who was born with HIV and has her infection under control despite no HIV medicines since she was around six, and a MS baby born with HIV in 2010 suppressed her infection for 27 months after stopping treatment before it reappeared in her blood.

Although HIV can not be detected in the child's body, it has been detected in their immune cells. Tests when she was 9 1/2 years old found signs of virus in a small number of immune system cells, but none capable of reproducing. The child was still healthy and without measurable HIV virus more than 11 years later.
