India beat Sri Lanka by 304 runs, take 1-0 lead

Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja shared six wickets between them equally as India wrapped up Sri Lanka for 245 runs in the final innings and completed their biggest win overseas with a 304 run margin on day four of the first Test in Galle. You can't be satisfied with a defeat.

"From that point of view I would say that we had a pretty good game".

"When you lose a game you are disappointed".

There never was a contest - India dominated nearly all sessions of play with the Lankans never having a chance. "They deserve all the credit", he added.

Asela Gunaratne, who had fractured his thumb and was ruled out of the series, and stand-in captain Rangana Herath, who suffered a hand injury on Friday, did not bat for Sri Lanka in the second innings.

"It was a massive blow for us (to lose Gunaratne)".

This win also continues India's brilliant run of form and gave them their 18th win in the last 28 matches. "It was a previous fracture and I am sure it will get better". "That was a big difference too in the game, and an area that we have to work on". Steve Waugh leads the list with 20 wins while his successor Ricky Ponting had won 19 out of his first 27 matches. Jadeja got the faintest of edges off Mendis' (36) bat and while the umpire said it was not out, Saha and Jadeja convinced Kohli to go for a review and Mendis had to walk back. Some of our plans went very well but we were not 100 per cent ideal.

Herath mentioned that the Galle pitch, a traditional ally of spinners, did not live up to the tag but he drew heart from seamer Nuwan Pradeep's bowling. Having said that, I expected the spinners to come into the equation on the fourth or fifth day. Perera, however, continued to fight on even though wickets kept falling at regular intervals at the other end. Kohli's return to Galle, after a shock loss in 2015, was triumphant. "The plain truth is that we didn't play well and we are to be blamed". Cheteshwar Pujara, who also made a century in the first innings, was caught by Kusal Mendis for 15 with the total on 56. Jadeja then took both the wickets that fell post lunch.

Earlier, hosts Sri Lanka were bowled out for 291 runs, chasing India's first innings score of 600 runs. He was outstanding in this game and his effort was fantastic.

Sri Lanka have been battered and bruised here by India and they will need to quickly pick themselves up if they are to make a contest of this three-match Test series.
