European Union urges Israel to find solution for safety of all

European Union urges Israel to find solution for safety of all

On Friday, Arab neighborhoods around the Old City of Jerusalem became the scene of clashes between Israeli police and Muslims, which gathered near the Old City to go to the Temple Mount and pray in Al-Aqsa mosque. "It's Palestinian leadership - Fatah and Hamas - that incites violence against Israelis on a daily basis".

Over the past week, there have been daily demonstrations and clashes between Israeli forces and Palestinians.

Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman said in a visit to Halamish that the assailant's family home would be demolished in the next few days.

Meanwhile, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas confirmed that an earlier decision to freeze ties with Israel on "all levels" also included a halt to security coordination.

Sweden, Egypt and France requested the meeting to urgently discuss de-escalation in Jerusalem.

However, his right-wing government is wary of being seen to yield to Palestinian pressure over the site, which Jews revere as the vestige of their two ancient temples and which was among areas of East Jerusalem that Israel captured in a 1967 war and annexed as its capital in a move not recognized internationally.

Some prisoners have been held in administrative detention for up to 11 years without any charges brought against them.

But public security minister Gilad Erdan has said that the metal detector checks for all Muslims could eventually be replaced with different measures, including more police officers and security cameras with facial recognition technology.

"We encourage Israel and Jordan to work together to find solutions that ensure security for all, respect the sanctity of the holy site and uphold the status quo", the statement said.

Israel fortified its troops in the West Bank and placed forces on high alert after the attack.

The victims were identified Sunday as Yosef Salomon, 70, and his adult children, 46-year-old Chaya and 35-year-old Elad. The Palestinian lawmaker was last arrested in mid-2014 after the killing of the three settlers in al-Khalil (Hebron). The Palestinian, who was shot and wounded at the scene, is in custody.

Six people are dead after Israeli-Palestinian tensions over the Holy Land's most contested shrine boiled over into violence.

Mohammad Fityani, a spokesman for the Palestinian Red Crescent in Jerusalem, told CNN its crews had dealt with 109 injured people by 3 p.m. local time, and that 72 of them were taken to the hospital.

"Security considerations are not the real motive behind the recent Israeli actions in Jerusalem's Old City and the vicinity of Al-Aqsa", he said.

In one instance, a CNN team outside Herod's Gate saw Israeli police start forcefully pushing worshipers back and pointing their weapons at them.
