White House Nominates Rosenworcel For FCC Return

Ordinarily in cases like this the president jointly nominates a Republican and a Democrat to limit partisan bickering during the Senate confirmation process.

"I publicly supported Commissioner Rosenworcel's confirmation last Congress, and I continue to appreciate her service", Thune said a year ago.

Her term expired in mid 2015, but the Senate Commerce Committee allowed her to stay until the end of 2016 while it declined to deal with President Obama's renomination of her.

"Few people have ever walked through the doors of the Federal Communications Commission with as much knowledge, experience, and good judgment as Jessica Rosenworcel", said Michael Copps, special advisor to Common Cause.

The fact that Trump didn't do this is already stoking political speculation that he actually views Rosenworcel as a replacement for Clyburn, not a complement. But no party can have more than a one-vote majority, so Trump has to nominate a Democrat and a Republican to fill the empty seats.

The White House announced the nomination in a late Tuesday release, months after the outgoing Obama administration renominated Rosenworcel, whose term expired at the end of December, and the Trump administration pulled that nomination in January.

Senate Democrats previously held up a vote on telecom policy legislation during the 114th Congress in an effort to force a vote on her nomination, according to Broadcast and Cable.

In addition to backing net neutrality rules, Rosenworcel has pushed for the expansion of the FCC's Lifeline program, which provides subsidized communications devices and services for low-income users. She has a new shot now, with President Trump announcing his intention to renominate her. "She has a distinguished record of public service, including the four-and-a-half years we worked together at this agency, and I look forward to working with her once again to advance the public interest". "She has shined a spotlight on the need to eliminate the homework gap to ensure America's students have access to the digital tools to help them succeed in school". His committee eventually confirmed Rosenworcel, but never made it to the Senate floor for a chamber-wide vote.

This appointment rights a wrong, because she deserved confirmation previous year, and should have been sitting on the Commission all along.

"We congratulate Jessica Rosenworcel and look forward to working closely to promote competition and fairness to all Americans", the group's president, Gene Kimmelman, said Wednesday. News of her renomination was met with the customary congrats.
