US Secret Service says it does not have any White House tapes

Sessions is scheduled to testify Tuesday before the Senate Intelligence committee and was due for sharp questioning.

White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer dodged questions about the issue but responded, the "president made clear in the Rose Garden last week that he would have an announcement shortly".

Trump should have given a straight answer when asked whether he has tapes of his communications with Comey during last week's news conference, Republican Senator Susan Collins of ME told CNN on Monday.

When asked what she thought of Comey's testimony, in which he said Trump suggested he drop a probe into former National Security adviser Michael Flynn's Russian Federation contacts, Ivanka Trump said her father felt "very vindicated.and feels incredibly optimistic".

The Technical Services Division of the Secret Service is charged with sweeping the White House premises for listening devices.

White House adviser Kellyanne Conway says testimony from former FBI Director James Comey "reflected very poorly on members of the Obama administration as well".

When past presidents like Richard Nixon and John F. Kennedy were in office, the Secret Service was in charge of maintaining their taped conversations.

They didn't rule on whether the travel ban violated the Constitution's ban on the government officially favoring or disfavoring any religion.

More recently, however, Trump seems to have had a habit of making a different play - of bluffing that he has tapes that will supposedly prove him right in some dispute or another, in an effort to get his opponent to back down. Spicer said the statement would be released "when the president's ready to make it".

Another Republican close to the White House said Trump's tape comments appeared similar to the hard-nosed tactics he took when his company was facing litigation. "You're going to be very disappointed when you hear the answer, don't worry".

Comey said he believed Mueller would look into Trump for obstruction of justice. It was this leak - the leak Trump that had asked Comey to drop the Flynn investigation - that prompted Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to recuse himself from the case and appoint Bob Mueller as special counsel.
