Texas toddlers died after being left in car overnight, sheriff says

Amanda Hawkins, 19, from Kerr County, Texas, allegedly left her children Brynn Hawkins, 1, (pictured top right) and Addyson Overgard-Eddy, 2, (top left) in a auto overnight and ignored them until they were unconscious and in "grave condition" the following day. Hawkins originally told medical staff that her daughters had collapsed after smelling flowers at nearby Flat Rock Lake park.

According to Kerr County Sheriff Hierholzer, both children were locked in the auto overnight and left there throughout the next morning, when temperatures in South Texas soared to 92 degrees outside.

An investigation by the police and child protective services found that Hawkins had intentionally left the girls overnight in her auto while at a friend's.

The two little girls were left inside a vehicle for more than 15 hours while their mother and her friends had fun in the house.

"We had heard that someone in the house could even hear crying and told her to bring them in the house and she didn't", he said.

Kerr County Sheriff Rusty Hierholzer stated that an attempt was made by Amanda Hawkins to bathe and clean up the girls before she took them to Peterson Regional Medical Center in Kerrville later on Wednesday.

Her daughters cried during the night but she ignored them, a sheriff said, and returned only at noon the next day.

According to KENS, prior to taking the children to hospital, Hawkins bathed and re-dressed the children in an attempt to cover up the fact that she had left them in the vehicle for so long with no food, water or bathroom breaks.

Davis said she stopping hanging out with Hawkins about a month ago because she was concerned how Hawkins treated her children.

She was arrested on Thursday and has been charged with two counts of abandoning or endangering a child, although police say these charges may be upgraded because the children died.

The girls were quickly taken to the University Hospital in San Antonio but died at about 17:00 on Thursday.

Hawkins was taken into custody and is in the Bexar County Jail awaiting transfer to Kerr County. Hierholzer told CNN affiliate KABB. Autopsies have been ordered, and additional charges may be filed in the case, the sheriff said.
