Nancy Pelosi Didn't Cost Jon Ossoff the Election

The election will not significantly change the balance of power in Washington, where Republicans control the White House and both chambers of Congress. Democrats on Tuesday also lost a special election in neighboring SC, where Republican Ralph Norman easily prevailed over Democrat Archie Parnell in a seat formerly held by Republican Mick Mulvaney, who is now Trump's budget director.

"Obviously, I wasn't too confident about it, as the Democrats had this massive fundraising advantage and there was all of this enthusiasm" on the left, said Curbelo, who represents a district that Democratic presidential nominee Hillary ClintonHillary Rodham ClintonSpecial election sweep boosts Trump agenda The Memo: Trump vote proves resilient in Georgia special election win Changing America, part V: The coming millennial boom MORE won a year ago.

"Nothing preps you for next election more than concluding your team is too virtuous to win & voters are too evil or dumb to see the truth", tweeted Jonah Goldberg, senior editor at National Review.

Wednesday, Pelosi stressed that now was the time for Democrats to come together.

Along with earlier wins in Kansas and Montana, Republicans are enjoying a special election sweep in House races over Democrats this year, albeit in Republican hotbeds.

The Georgia loss sparked a quick reaction from Democrats.

In response, Behar again hammered Democrats for failing to get more voters to the polls. "We need a genuinely new message, a serious jobs plan that reaches all Americans, and a bigger tent".

"There are a lot of really important battles that we came out of on top of even as the minority", he said.

Ryan, who tried to unseat Pelosi, D-Calif., as House minority leader after the November elections, said she remained a political drag on other Democrats.

Ossoff ran as a moderate, with some people saying he was trying to look like a Republican.

Had the Democratic Party focused more attention and resources on the SC special election, which was largely overshadowed by the contest in Georgia, it may have been able to pull off an upset.

But prescriptions for how the Democrats should move forward varied.

Handel staved off the young enthusiastic Democratic candidate, Jon Ossoff, in a runoff to become the first Republican woman ever elected by Georgia voters to head to Congress. In Kansas in April, in Montana last month and in Georgia and SC on Tuesday, Democratic candidates outperformed their party's past showings, but still fell short where it counts: Republicans won. Republicans have won all four of the four special elections that have been held under President Trump.

If energized Democrats had claimed either of those long-held GOP seats, they could have argued that even traditionally red seats are in play in 2018 and Republicans who back Trump's agenda do so at their own peril. If Democrats fall short next year, she may join the growing list of California's older Democratic leaders put out to pasture.

Democrats were hesitant to attack the President in such a historically heavily Republican district.

The unpopularity of Trump and the Republican healthcare law - along with the historic trend that the party holding the White House loses seats in midterm elections - gives Democrats hope for capturing the House in 2018.

Mrs Handel said at her victory rally that she knew it was going to "require all hands on deck" for Republicans to hold on to the district.

Spending on the Georgia race reached at least $57 million, almost twice the previous record, according to the Center for Responsive Politics watchdog group.
