Michigan Officials Charged With Manslaughter For Water Crisis

The tweet comes after Bill Schuette charged Michigan Health and Human Services Director Nick Lyon and four other former Flint and state officials with involuntary manslaughter for failing to alert the public about an outbreak of Legionnaires' disease in the Flint area.

Dr. Eden Wells is charged with obstruction of justice and lying to a police officer.

The head of the MI health department and the state's chief medical officer are the latest to be charged in an investigation of Flint's lead-contaminated water. The investigation has shown that Lyon allegedly received notice of a deadly Legionnaires' Disease outbreak in Genesee County almost one year before he informed the public. Both pleaded not guilty.

Flint Rising also delivered another message to the governor Wednesday, or rather, over 1,000 messages from Flint residents contained in empty water bottles - one for every day since the crisis began.

Current Flint mayor Karen Weaver has not been charged in the case. Schuette, a fellow Republican who is expected to run for governor next year as Snyder's term expires, said there was insufficient evidence.

December 20: Schuette charges former emergency managers Darnell Earley and Gerald Ambrose with multiple 20-year felonies for their failure to protect the residents of Flint from health hazards caused by contaminated drinking water. We said - we've had people who have lost their lives.

Yet Snyder, who on Wednesday offered a statement in support of Lyon and Wells, continues to evade accountability.

Enthusiasm that those believed responsible may be punished is tempered by the fallout: 12 people died from Legionnaires' disease, which experts believe was linked to tainted water; thousands of children may be afflicted with lead poisoning for years; an estimated 20,000 corroded lead service lines await replacement at a cost of more than $100 million; numerous lawsuits remain unresolved.

It is also challenging for people who don't speak English to take advantage of the resources, she says, even legal residents or USA citizens.

But when two of Lyon's employees at DHHS were criminally charged in the same investigation last year, they were suspended from their jobs - a decision that's kept them out of work for almost a year.

In Michigan, two high-ranking state officials face serious charges for keeping an outbreak of Legionnaires' disease from the public. They were arraigned Thursday in Genesee County District Court.

They were among six current and former MI and Flint officials criminally charged on Wednesday. "The families of Flint have experienced a tragic health and safety crisis for the past three years".

April 20, 2016: Two state officials and a local official are charged with evidence tampering and other crimes in the MI attorney general's investigation - the first to be levied in the probe. "You'll have to show that it wasn't just doing a bad job, but doing a really bad job that is so far outside the norm that a jury can say this is reckless".

PLUTA: These are the most serious charges yet filed related to the water crisis and the most high-reaching.

The charging documents said that Lyon's "acts and failure to act resulted in the death of at least one person".

Schuette and prosecutors shot down that argument at the press conference, stating that the source of the Legionnaires' outbreak was the water, not the hospital, and said experts would testify to that.

"You're labeling people as killers", said Peter Henning, a Wayne State University criminal law professor. Shekter Smith was sacked previous year and Busch is on paid leave.

Earley's attorney Todd Perkins said he's "very disappointed in these new charges", adding his client has "done nothing wrong".

Mike Glasgow, former Flint Water Treatment Plant Operator, was allegedly pressured by Croft to start using the Flint Water Treatment Plant.
