McCain Says His Confusing Questions Resulted From Tiredness

Comey also said in his written testimony that Trump, in a odd private encounter near the grandfather clock in the Oval Office, pushed him to end his investigation into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn. The Times, through a spokeswoman, said it had reviewed the story in question and found no evidence that the reporting was inaccurate.

During Thursday's hearing, former FBI Diretor James Comey was apparently very confused during his exchange with Sen. "Tell me the difference between your conclusion as far as former Secretary Clinton is concerned and Mr. Trump". The senator was slow speaking, and at times perplexing, making people ask: What's wrong with John McCain?

After the 80-year-old McCain noticed that many on the internet were left questioning what, exactly, he was trying to get out of Comey, the Arizona senator explained himself on Twitter and offered a reason for why he was so misunderstood by many: He was up late watching an Arizona Diamondbacks game.

McCain said he doesn't understand how Comey could be done with the Clinton probe having concluded no charges were warranted, but wouldn't say the same about the Russian investigation. Turning more serious, McCain said, "while I missed an opportunity in today's hearing, I still believe this question is important, and I intend to submit it in writing to Mr. Comey for the record".

During the first part of his special participation, McCain compared the Clinton probe to the Russian interference investigation. "I didn't believe she could credibly decline that investigation", Comey replied.

"The attorney general directed me not to call it an investigation and call it a matter - which confused me", Comey said, adding that he felt he "needed to step away from the department" in order to protect the FBI.

McCain says, "I get the sense from Twitter that my line of questioning today went over people's heads".

"I think it's hard to reconcile, in one case you reach a complete conclusion, and on the other side you have not", McCain said.

Comey's unilateral decision to announce last July he was closing the probe - which turned out to be premature - infuriated Republicans who thought the Democratic presidential candidate deserved to be prosecuted for mishandling classified information. "Maybe going forward I shouldn't stay up late watching the Diamondback night games", referring to the Arizona baseball team.
