Iran fires missiles against Islamic State in Syria

Iran's Revolutionary Guard said Sunday it launched missiles into eastern Syria targeting Islamic State militants in response to an attack on Iran's parliament and a shrine in Tehran, warning that it would similarly retaliate on anyone else carrying out attacks in Iran.

IRGC forces fired the medium-range, ground-to-ground ballistic missiles from bases in the western Iranian provinces of Kermanshah and Kurdistan, according to Iranian state media outlet Tasnim news.

Iran is allied with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the ongoing Syrian civil war.

The IRGC said the operation "struck them with lethal and crushing blows", adding that intelligence reports indicate "a large number of Takfiri terrorists have been killed and their equipment, systems and weapons have been destroyed".

The Guard warned Islamic State militants and their "regional and worldwide supporters" that similar retaliatory attacks would target them as well if another assault in Iran occurs.

"The spilling of any innocent blood will not go unanswered", Press TV cited a statement by the Revolutionary Guards as saying. It was the first time that ISIS, a Sunni Muslim group fighting Iranian-backed militias in Syria, has claimed responsibility for an attack in Iran.

Shiite-majority Iran and Sunni-majority Saudi Arabia have long had a sectarian feud.
