Injured staffer worked for Texas Republicans

Rep. Roger Williams, a Texas Republican, broke down in tears while thanking the police officers who came to his and other congressmen's aide as they were shot at during a baseball practice in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday morning. Williams (R-Austin) was at the practice but wasn't hurt, according to his office. Williams said, "He is receiving medical attention but is doing well and is expected to make a full recovery".

Among the five injured was Zack Barth, a correspondence staffer for Austin-area Rep. Roger Williams.

The Republican baseball team holds practice every morning at 6:30am ET at Eugene Simpson Stadium Park in Alexandria, Virginia. U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise, R-Louisiana, was among those shot. The suspect, identified as James T. Hodgkinson, 66, died from his injuries, according to President Donald Trump. "Officers of the Capitol Police returned fire and ran towards the shooter, risking their lives while saving others", Rep. Joe Barton said in a statement.

Please keep the member of my staff and all members of the congressional baseball team in your thoughts in prayers during this extremely hard time. As a member of the congressional leadership, Scalise had a Capitol police security detachment assigned to him.

"This could have easily been 25 deaths or more today", said Williams, who has represented Burnet County in Congress since 2013.

In the contest for chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, House Republicans elected Rep. Steve Stivers of OH over Rep. Roger Williams, R-Austin.

"Americans everywhere should be thankful that this is still the kind of country that still produces these kinds of heroes", he said, adding that he will attend the scheduled baseball game between Republican and Democratic House members tomorrow.
