Dad, two children dead after Father's Day after custody dispute

Santa Rosa police were called to the home in the 700 block of Slater Street around 9:50 a.m. Monday by Sonoma County sheriff's deputies who had been investigating a child custody violation that originated in the sheriff's office's jurisdiction, Santa Rosa police Lt. John Cregan said.

He was supposed to return the children to their mother Sunday night, but never did.

When authorities showed up at Camara's house Monday morning, they found Camara and his two children dead inside. Camara hanged himself in a bedroom, the bodies of his daughter and son were nearby.

Camara was married but had been separated for six months. The child was fine, police would later say.

Neighbors who were interviewed by ABC7 said Camara came across as a loving father. "It just caught all of us by surprise, and it's very tragic, we aren't sure why he would do such a thing?"

"A handsome little girl and a sweet little boy", said Julia Poncia. "He was always playing with them, riding his bike out here with them".

A California man killed his two children before killing himself on Father's Day, WXIN reported.

A YouCaring page has been set up to help Julian and Juliana's family.

When no one answered her knock she called the Sonoma County Sheriff's Department.

Police reportedly visited the home on Sunday night and found it quiet.

They left, and returned Monday morning, with anxious relatives.

Still, there appeared to be no warning of the violence. At that time, they had no formal custody arrangement.

A neighbor told KTVU she thought she heard voices coming from the apartment earlier that morning.

"They're really super sweet kids and he seemed like a really good father", neighbor Carrie Buchholz told the news station.

The couple had been together about eight years, and filed for divorce only a few months ago.

'We're stilll going to be exploring the timeline to determine when the children were last seen and when the tragedy occurred, ' Cregan said.
